LEGO Day Lessons: Overcoming Leadership Challenges

Today is International LEGO Day, a celebration of creativity and the joy of building something with your own two hands. For me, it’s not just about a fun hobby or a childhood pastime; it’s deeply connected to my journey as an entrepreneur and how I overcame my own leadership challenges.

When I was grappling with the decision to leave my role at the Boone EDC, a job I loved and had poured so much of myself into, I felt overwhelmed (to put it lightly). The thought of walking away from something the teams and I had spent over a decade building was daunting. But at the same time, my husband and I had a bigger vision for our family.

Part of that vision includes owning at least one Airbnb, starting with an A-frame cabin. The idea of creating a place where our family and other families could connect, relax, and make memories just felt right. But I wasn’t sure whether we’d get there on our current path.

During this time, I confided in a friend about our goals. She suggested that I find a tangible reminder of what I was working toward, something to keep in my office as a symbol of our bigger dreams. I struggled with what that could be until I remembered the LEGO A-frame cabin I had seen. It felt like the perfect, literal representation of our aspirations: something to build, piece by piece, with care and intention. So I bought it.

Now, that little LEGO cabin sits in my office as a constant reminder. It represents more than just a property or a business goal. It’s about building something meaningful—for my family, for myself, and for the clients I work with through mkw+co.

As I reflect on this journey, it reminds me of why I love executive coaching. Just like building a LEGO set, coaching is about taking things step by step. Sometimes it means starting over or reimagining the pieces you already have. And just like I needed a tangible reminder of my goals, sometimes my clients need someone to help them see the bigger picture or reconnect with their “why.”

So, as we celebrate LEGO Day, I encourage you to think about what you’re building, both personally and professionally. What are your goals? Are leadership challenges holding you back? And what small, tangible step can you take today to move closer to the life you’re dreaming of?

If you’re ready to dive deeper into the professional and personal challenges holding you back, let’s work together. I’ve been there, and I know how powerful it can be to have someone help you build your dreams, brick by brick. Let’s get started—your A-frame cabin is waiting. Schedule your call today.

Still a work in progress:
