How to Improve Nonprofit Board Engagement
Executive directors often wonder how to improve their nonprofit board engagement. The truth is, if your board feels stuck, you are not alone. I’ve been there myself.
Here are three clear signs your board might need a reset:
1. You can’t get quorum.
When you struggle each month to gather enough members to vote or to even hold a meeting, it slows everything down. This is one of the first signs that nonprofit board engagement is low.
2. No one reads the reports.
You spend hours writing board reports, but members come to meetings unprepared. Without engaged board members, decisions take longer and frustration builds.
3. Members ask if they are needed.
I had a board member who would frequently text me to ask if he was needed at a board meeting. I never knew how to answer, but I wanted to answer with, “YES! You’re on the board. Please show up and participate and HELP.” Instead, I usually ended up deflated (“Why do they not care?”) and would send a text back confirming that that member wasn’t needed for quorum purposes, if that was the case (“but I’d still like to see you at the meeting”).
If board members don’t see their role or feel useful, they may check out. When this happens, it’s time to rethink how to improve nonprofit board engagement.
So what can you do right now?
Start small. Try sending board materials in a short, easy-to-read format — think one-page summaries instead of 20-page packets. Then, take five minutes at the start of each meeting to clearly name what decisions need to be made. These small shifts can spark better conversations and improve nonprofit board engagement without a full overhaul.
The good news? Your board may not be broken. With clear expectations, better communication, and strong meeting design, you can improve nonprofit board engagement and get back to the mission.
And you don’t have to figure it out alone.
