3 Common Nonprofit Board Problems That Hurt Your Mission

Nonprofit boards are there to guide the mission, protect the organization, raise money…but there are some common board problems I’ve seen that can impact even the best nonprofits out there. I’ve seen it as an executive director, as a board member, and as a consultant. So, let’s dig in and fix it.

Problem 1. Board Members Can’t Clearly Explain What You Do

Board members should be able to explain:

  • Who you serve
  • What you do
  • Why it matters

If they can’t, that’s a problem, because board members are ambassadors. If they are unclear, donors and partners will be too.

Problem 2. Board Giving Isn’t at 100%

Every board member should give. Board policies should set what the amount is or if it is simply giving something. When board giving isn’t at 100%, then donors notice and won’t give themselves. It opens the door to questions of why or what’s wrong with your nonprofit that your most engaged people don’t give? You don’t want that door opened.

Problem 3. The Board Debates Logo Colors but Avoids the Financials

Boards exist for governance, to strategize, to provide oversight, and to ensure financial health. If board meetings nit pick things like design details (not saying I’ve had this happen…), but avoid cash flow, sustainability, or long-term planning, the board is off track.

This Isn’t About Blame

Every nonprofit board faces problems, so please hear me very clearly: this isn’t about blaming anyone. It is about getting your nonprofit on the right track again. And you’ll start by clarifying roles.

When roles are clear:

  • Boards lead.
  • Staff execute.
  • Fundraising improves.
  • The mission moves forward.
