Has Your Social Media Strategy Evolved Enough?
If you were around when Al Gore created the internet, then we need to talk.
I jest. Al Gore didn’t actually create the internet. But if you got the joke, you’re probably around my age, and there’s a good chance your social media strategy needs an update.
For many of us, social media started as a way to broadcast information. We posted updates, promoted events, and shared content like a digital megaphone. But younger audiences? They see things differently.
The Shift: From media to social
Younger generations — Millennials (not the Oregon Trail generation like myself…probably), Gen Z, and the up-and-coming Gen Alpha — aren’t just consuming content; they’re engaging with it. They value:
- Connection – They want real conversations, not just scheduled posts.
- Community – They follow brands and people who cultivate a sense of belonging.
- Authenticity – Highly polished, corporate-speak posts? Not so much. They want real, unfiltered content.
And yet, many of us (myself included) are still treating social media like a traditional marketing channel, a one-way street instead of a two-way conversation.
Are you talking at people or with them?
How often do you post something and just move on? No engagement. No follow-up. No checking in on comments beyond a quick like.
That approach doesn’t work anymore. A successful social media strategy isn’t just about pushing content; it’s about fostering real interactions. It’s about responding thoughtfully, creating conversations, and making people feel like they’re part of something.
So here’s the challenge: how are you adapting?
- Are you making space for real conversations, or just pushing content?
- Are you responding to comments with genuine replies, or just emojis?
- Are you inviting people into your brand story, or just promoting offers?
The world of social media has shifted—are you shifting with it? A strong social media strategy isn’t just about consistency; it’s about connection.
